NELSON: NEW ATTORNEY GENERAL MUST BE INDEPENDENT, RESTORE CONFIDENCE IN JUSTICE DEPARTMENT

Today, President George W. Bush announced that he has selected former U.S. District Judge Michael B. Mukasey as his nominee for attorney general. Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson issued the following statement on the announcement:

"For months, the Department of Justice has been rocked by controversy and conflict. With today's announcement, I am hopeful the Administration can put those days behind it. Judge Mukasey appears to be well-qualified for the job and has a reputation for being fair and independent - someone who has not built a career on being a Washington insider. Above all else, we need to have an attorney general who can restore confidence in the Department of Justice - both internally and with Congress and the American people."
